Guelph was founded on St. George's Day, April 23, 1827, as one of the first planned communities in Canada. It was designed by Scottish-born novelist John Galt while he was superintendent of the Canada Company, a British-based land development firm. Named after an ancestral branch of Britain's royal family, Guelph has become known as "The Royal City". The city's population (2001) is 106,170 with a metropolitan population of 117,344.
